I remember from childhood, seeing them stick a pin into some ball of ink-paste to make marks into the clothes - but never till now thought about the whole big logistical aspect of how these were used to track individual households! so amazing!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-26619478238702132452007-08-29T19:26:00.000+05:302007-08-29T19:26:00.000+05:30deadly post :)deadly post :)Vineetahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11342570175344803938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-39125872669380712012007-05-02T02:24:00.000+05:302007-05-02T02:24:00.000+05:30its interesting to see how they do it on such a l...its interesting to see how they do it on such a large scale. but are not washing machines destroying there business .i mean why do peoples go to them instead of using machinesankurindiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08162315163109525385noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-1247506423968043422007-04-23T04:06:00.000+05:302007-04-23T04:06:00.000+05:30very nice post, awesome pictures, you make me cry ...very nice post, awesome pictures, you make me cry with bombay-sickness!

:'(The_Girl_From_Ipanemahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14235396580576749154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-36704449212808743842007-04-22T22:46:00.000+05:302007-04-22T22:46:00.000+05:30Nice documentary stuff, i miss bombay!Nice documentary stuff, i miss bombay!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-46212676827459983352007-04-17T16:22:00.000+05:302007-04-17T16:22:00.000+05:30very very nice :) just came across your blog!very very nice :) just came across your blog!Clydehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01669673801388370223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-78983136785107680062007-04-15T22:21:00.000+05:302007-04-15T22:21:00.000+05:30Absolutely fabulous! You succeed in doing that. And how.
The pictures are beautiful, to say the least. They can hold their own without any description.
In in the end, writing like this-where the readers can see and feel it all for themselves- is really the best kind.

Good luck with your writing :)Quaint Murmurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12869482006532388065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-64104946171989555092007-04-09T19:39:00.000+05:302007-04-09T19:39:00.000+05:30This comment has been removed by the author.Quaint Murmurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12869482006532388065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-4061029470311377042007-04-08T11:39:00.000+05:302007-04-08T11:39:00.000+05:30You know, beyond the pics etc - what I really like...You know, beyond the pics etc - what I really like, is the way you've written about a completely different profession and world, without exoticising it, or making them seem like animals in a zoo. I think its tough for even well meaning writers to achieve that. But I pesonally feel that by getting your clothes washed at such places you are likely to get Dhobi-itches, due to this I never get my clothes washed from them. Further as faor social arrangements are concerned, we in Haryana, Punjab, Rajsthan and western UP know Dhobis only as a caste but have never seen them washing(they only iron these days) in the society. I always wonder how this large community srvived in the olden golden days of social cohesion, in which all the other people(cobblers, ironsmiths, masons, weavers and carpenters)had got some thing or the other to do.

http://karnail.blogspot.com/Wandererhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08423648202608466838noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5487586.post-63641447072038884942007-04-05T13:32:00.000+05:302007-04-05T13:32:00.000+05:30Oh so it was fun because it smelled like detergent...Oh so it was fun because it smelled like detergent?! that's it?
The clothes line pic is my favourite among all :)
I have a similar one though with a different subject!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
